Welcome to what is now a series, published every Sunday morning in an attempt to force myself to write for me. Every week I’ll be mapping out what I’ve read, watched or listened to so that I can be more mindful of my media consumption.
Without further ado, let’s get into it:
Books
Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley - It took just half a day to breeze through this one and I’ve had it on my TBR for almost 4 years, so what was up with that? Absolutely loved the atmospheric way Shelley chose to write a horror story and in my very limited experience with the genre, all the good horror books I’ve read know how to play with atmosphere. I said this on my Goodreads review as well, the best rendition of this was the Benedict Cumberbatch stage play by the National Theatre which is unfortunately no longer available on YouTube.
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke - Am I slowly cleaning up my digital TBR pile? Yes I am. This might take a while for unlike her other book Piranesi which is now one of my all time favourites, Jonathan Strange is a dense big boi.
TV & Movies
Sweet Home, Season 3 (Netflix) - This weekend will be about binging this sleeper favourite of mine. Season 2 and Season 3 so far has not been able to live up to the adrenaline-fueled chainsaw-fest that Season 1 was, but I am attached to the characters and as long as their humanity drives the plot, I am here for the ride.
YouTube
how the opium trade destroyed china’s greatest empire - The Poppy Wars is another of my niche historical obsessions and this is the perfect entry piece to understand just how shameless the British were in their determination to undermine a powerful nation.
filmmaker reacts to the bear season 2, episode 6: the fishes - Perhaps one of the greatest episodes on TV, it was fascinating to watch a filmmaker react to this so I could pick out even more clever nuances of directorial and writing genius. When I become a famous novelist one day and I’m asked which story I wish I’d written, I will say “the bear, season 2, episode 6: the fishes.”
whatever happened to earthsea? - Nothing really, those who know, know. But you should watch this breakdown and then go read what is one of the best fantasy worldbuilding ever by the GOAT Ursula K Le Guin.
Recommendations:
Just putting it out there that you should listen to Charlie XCX’s brat this summer, not because it has become a trend, but because that’s some brilliant music.
Thanks for reading!
